 Speech to the CDI Meeting

Leaders of the Centrist Democrat International (CDI) approved a resolution against the terrorist group ETA at the September 20, 2007 meeting in Rome:

“The CDI expresses its deepest concern for the new wave of terrorism Spain is undergoing since the terrorist organisation ETA broke the truce it unilaterally announced. Apart from the increase of street terrorism, ETA started committing again large-scale attacks which blind and indiscriminate violence provoked victims and countless material damages. The CDI is of the opinion that, considering the failure of the talks the Spanish Government entered into with the terrorists, the new wave of terrorists attacks Spain is suffering constitutes a crucial opportunity to reaffirm the basic principles on which the fight against terrorism should be based: to carry out the fight against terrorism fully respecting the Rule of Law but making use of all the possibilities allowed by the Rule of Law; to refuse to pay any political price whatsoever and finally, demand the end of violence without any counterparts. The CDI reiterates its full commitment and support towards the victims of terrorism. Trying to ease their pain and granting them the social acknowledgement they really deserve is simply a moral obligation of democratic societies. As well, the CDI is fully committed towards strengthening international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and restraining the international channels of dialogue that were made available to the terrorists during the failed dialogue process.”

“My dear friends, I have good news. This state of things is going to change in Spain in six months. The People's Party that I lead is going to win the general elections of March, 2008. Our victory will also be yours, because the government that I will preside will once again have a strong voice in Europe. First it was Angela Merkel in Germany, then Nicolas Sarkozy in France, Karamanlis in Greece. Now it's our turn; the time of change is coming to Spain, and soon Italy.”
